Bayelsa kicks off 30th anniversary with Ijaw language, sports events
Bayelsa State has commenced activities marking the 30th anniversary of its creation with an Ijaw Language Awareness programme and sporting events in Yenagoa.
Governor Douye Diri said the celebration began with the language programme at the DSP Alamieyeseigha Banquet Hall, where he reaffirmed the importance of the Ijaw language to the identity and pride of the people.
Diri said his administration had continued the Ijaw language policy in the state’s educational system, including the engagement of 200 Izon teachers and plans to create more activities in schools to promote the adopted Kolokuma Izon language.
He urged Ijaw people at home and in the diaspora to continue to speak, teach and promote the language in homes, schools and public places.
The governor later led government officials and residents to the Samson Siasia Sports Complex, Ovom, for sporting activities, including traditional wrestling and a novelty football match between the executive and legislative arms of government.
The event also featured the recognition of 40 sports legends from Bayelsa.
Bayelsa State was created on October 1, 1996, by the then military administration of General Sani Abacha, making it one of the states created from the old Rivers State.
The anniversary activities continue on Tuesday with a Cultural Float and Boat Regatta to showcase the state’s rich Ijaw culture.
