Chest-Deep Floods Force Delta Residents From Homes

The scene captured the human cost of a heavy downpour that lasted from Sunday night until about 5pm Monday, leaving homes, business places, schools and roads submerged across parts of Delta State.

In Agbarho, residents around Orido Junction, Esiso and Oviri struggled through the flood as water overwhelmed streets and entered homes.

The flooding also affected several parts of Warri South, Uvwie, Udu, Ughelli South and Okpe.

In Uvwie, areas including Ugbomro, Alegbo, Alaka, Ugbolokposo, Effurun-Sapele Road, Jakpa Road, Refinery Road, Shaguolo and Niger-Cat in Ekpan were badly affected.

In Warri South, residents of Okumagba Avenue, Ubeji, Okere, among others, also battled floodwaters.

Parts of Udu, including Orhuwhorun and Odjikpata, Ovwian, as well as Otokutu and Jeddo in Ughelli South, were affected.

At Okuokoko in Okpe, several families around Princess Jokoh Close, near the Osubi-Okuokoko boundary, were displaced.

“The downpour has sacked me and other neighbours from their home. All my properties have been destroyed. My entire apartment is currently submerged,” a victim lamented.

The affected residents appealed for urgent assistance, saying the lack of functional drainage systems had worsened the flooding.

The latest incident has renewed calls for urgent intervention to tackle drainage and flooding across the Warri metropolis and surrounding communities.
