The Delta State Police Command has begun a statewide clampdown on reckless driving following more than 50 fatal road crash and other preventable cases recorded across the state between July and the second week of September 2026.

The enforcement exercise, codenamed Operation Velvet, commenced on Tuesday and targets motorists driving against traffic (one-way), using unregistered vehicles, and committing other traffic offences on highways and major roads across Delta State.

Police Public Relations Officer, SP Bright Edafe, said many of the deaths recorded during the period were linked to avoidable road crashes, stressing that motorists must comply with traffic regulations.

“There will be no mercy for anyone caught,” Edafe warned.

He said the operation is aimed at protecting lives, restoring discipline on the roads, and making Delta State’s highways safer for everyone.
