The Delta State Fire Service responded to an emergency on Monday along the Asaba–Benin Expressway after a petrol tanker collided with a low-bed trailer at the Customs checkpoint in Okpanam, spilling fuel onto the road.

According to the State Director, Dr. Eugene Oziwelle, firefighters arrived promptly and doused both the tanker and the spilled fuel to prevent a possible explosion, while securing the area to stop residents from attempting to scoop the fuel.

He also disclosed that the Sapele Fire Station, which has been particularly busy in recent times, extinguished a fire at the Asaboro Sawmill Junction wood market, where goods worth millions of naira were destroyed.

In a separate incident on Tuesday, the station contained a fire at an event centre near Wetland Hotel in Amukpe, preventing it from spreading to the main building, though several items were lost. Dr. Oziwelle commended the firefighters and urged residents to keep inflammable materials away from their homes.
