The management of Delta State Polytechnic, Oghara, has announced a ban on extortion and several other practices involving staff and students. The measures, which were approved at a recent management meeting, were contained in a statement issued by the Registrar, Efedi Chukwuemeke.

According to the statement, the Polytechnic has prohibited a range of activities that exploit students, including the sale of textbooks above approved prices, collection of money for books not supplied, unauthorized charges for projects, assignments and manuals, as well as the collection of money in exchange for examination marks, commonly known as “blocking.”

The institution also outlawed sexual harassment of students, the use of non-staff members to teach courses, and the engagement of non-staff as personal assistants within the Polytechnic.

Lecturers have further been warned against using students as agents to collect money, compelling students to purchase textbooks, or requiring them to write textbook numbers on examination answer scripts.

Management stated that students who fail to attain the mandatory 75 per cent class attendance will not be permitted to sit for examinations. It added that violations of the new directives by teaching or non-teaching staff would attract sanctions in accordance with the Polytechnic’s existing rules and urged all members of the institution to comply with the measures.
