The training is aimed at strengthening the capacity of healthcare professionals to identify possible cancer cases early, initiate appropriate clinical assessments and ensure timely referrals for further investigation and treatment.

The initiative comes amid the growing importance of early cancer diagnosis, which can improve treatment outcomes and reduce complications associated with late presentation.

With the planned introduction of specialised oncology services at Osubi Specialist Hospital, the state government is seeking to expand access to cancer care and reduce the burden on residents who currently travel outside Delta for specialised medical attention.

For patients and their families, accessing treatment outside the state can involve additional transportation, accommodation and other expenses, often adding to the financial and emotional pressures associated with a cancer diagnosis.

The planned services could help address some of these challenges by bringing specialised care closer to communities across Delta State.

The training of more than 50 doctors also highlights the importance of developing a skilled workforce alongside investments in specialised medical facilities. Effective cancer services require trained personnel, reliable diagnostic equipment, appropriate treatment options and referral systems that connect patients to the care they need.

The initiative forms part of efforts to strengthen healthcare delivery and improve access to specialised services across the state.
