The bridge was reopened on Thursday, October 15, by the Minister of Works, Senator , following repairs aimed at improving its structural condition and safety for motorists.

The bridge had been closed from September 7 to allow emergency maintenance after damage to structural components was discovered. The closure was extended beyond the original September 21 reopening date because of rainfall and delays in completing the work.

The rehabilitation included repairs to damaged components, improved road markings, solar-powered streetlights, CCTV cameras and additional traffic-management measures. The bridge is a major transport link connecting Nigeria’s South-East and South-South regions.

On the Benin–Asaba Expressway, Umahi said President Bola Tinubu had directed a comprehensive redesign ahead of reconstruction. He also disclosed that the Federal Government had cancelled a remedial contract covering the first 11 kilometres of the road over concerns about the quality of work delivered.

The announcement comes amid persistent complaints from motorists over the condition of the highway, an important route for the movement of passengers and goods between Delta and Edo states.

Delta State Governor Sheriff Oborevwori, represented at the bridge reopening by Commissioner Charles Aniagwu, commended the Federal Government’s intervention.

The Asagba of Asaba, Obi Prof. Epiphany Azinge, SAN, also applauded the rehabilitation, according to the statement shared by Hon. Onyedikachi Odogwu.

The reopening is expected to ease travel disruptions for commuters and transport operators. However, attention will now turn to the execution of the proposed Benin–Asaba Expressway reconstruction and whether it will provide lasting relief to road users.
