Independence Day Run in Effurun Disrupted as Youths Reject Tinubu-Branded Shirts
A 5-kilometre Independence Day fitness run at PTI Junction in Effurun, Delta State, was disrupted on Thursday after some participants rejected polo shirts bearing the image of President Bola Tinubu.

The incident occurred as youths gathered for the October 1 event reportedly organised by Soft Nigeria, a youth-focused political and civic mobilisation group.
Some participants tore the distributed shirts, with others setting them alight while chants of “Obi! Obi! Obi!” were heard from the crowd.
Reports from the scene indicate that some participants were unhappy with the political branding on the shirts, having expected the gathering to focus primarily on the Independence Day fitness activity.
The development at PTI Junction comes against the backdrop of increasing political activity in Delta State ahead of the 2027 general elections.
While videos from the scene clearly show participants tearing and burning the shirts, the available footage does not establish that all those present at the event participated in the rejection or that everyone involved was affiliated with a particular political group.
No injuries or physical assaults were reported, although the incident brought the scheduled fitness activity into the spotlight and quickly generated reactions across social media.
As of the latest reports, there was no detailed public statement from the event organisers explaining how the political-branded shirts came to be distributed at the run or responding to the reaction from participants.
Soft Nigeria describes itself as a youth movement involved in civic participation, voter sensitisation and government-awareness campaigns. Its activities have also included political mobilisation. In June, the Delta State chapter received two vehicles from the Delta State Sports Commission chairman for mobilisation activities ahead of the 2027 elections, with the report stating that the group was supporting President Tinubu and Delta State Governor Sheriff Oborevwori.
