The plenary session, titled “Governing AI in Nigeria’s 2027 Elections: Safeguards, Accountability, and Electoral Integrity,” examined the need for clear regulatory frameworks, defined institutional responsibilities and accountability mechanisms to guide the use of AI in elections.

Moderated by Geoffrey Uzono of Channels Television, the session featured former INEC National Commissioner, Prof. Okechukwu Ibeanu; Dr. Lisa Poggiali of the International Foundation for Electoral Systems (IFES); Cynthia Mbamalu of Yiaga Africa; and Sani Suleiman of Paradigm Initiative.

The discussion focused on the importance of effective oversight and risk assessment in addressing potential AI-related threats to the electoral process, including the possibility of emerging technologies being used in ways that undermine electoral credibility.

The panel also highlighted the need for clear standards to ensure accountability among institutions and stakeholders involved in the deployment of AI in elections.

As Nigeria prepares for the 2027 polls, the discussions placed AI governance and institutional accountability among the issues requiring attention in efforts to protect electoral integrity and sustain public confidence in the democratic process.
