Jonathan, Olu of Warri, Obi of Onitsha, Grace Opobo King Jaja VI’s Coronation
Former President Goodluck Jonathan, the Obi of Onitsha, Igwe Nnaemeka Achebe, and the Olu of Warri, Ogiame Atuwatse III, were among dignitaries and traditional rulers who attended the coronation of King Charles Douglas MacPepple Jaja as the sixth Amanyanabo of Opobo Kingdom in Rivers State on Saturday.
The ceremony, held at King Jaja Square, Opobo Town, also attracted the Amanyanabo of Bonny, King Edward Asimini Dappa Pepple, the Obong of Calabar and other traditional rulers from across the Niger Delta.
King Charles, who was elected monarch in December 2025 following the transition of his predecessor, King Dandeson Douglas Jaja, was crowned by the Bishop of the Niger Delta Diocese, Rt. Rev. Emmanuel Oko-Jaja.
He assumed the title Jeki VI, becoming the sixth Amanyanabo since the legendary King Jaja founded the Opobo Kingdom in 1870.
Jonathan congratulated the new monarch and the people of Opobo, recalling the historical significance of King Jaja and urging the new king to promote peace, unity and development in the kingdom.
The Obi of Onitsha, Igwe Achebe, also highlighted the historic relationship between Onitsha and Opobo, describing King Jaja as a leader who fought for the freedom and prosperity of his people.
Representing the Rivers State Government, Deputy Governor Ngozi Odu described the coronation as a celebration of the state's culture and identity, while wishing the new monarch a reign of wisdom, peace and progress.
Other traditional rulers at the ceremony included King Buribaye Dakolo of Ekpetiama Kingdom, Eze Iweka III of Obosi, Eze Aro, Eze Eberechi Oji and Eze Eberiuogo of Omuma.
In his remarks, King Jaja VI thanked the people of Opobo for their support, pledging to protect their freedom and rights and uphold the dignity of the throne.
