Lagos Opens West Africa’s Largest Land Information Archive
Lagos State has unveiled a new central facility for storing and managing land records as the state moves to strengthen the use of data in planning and administering one of Africa’s fastest-growing cities.

Governor Babajide Sanwo Olu commissioned the Lagos Land Archive on Wednesday as part of activities marking GIS Day 2026.
The facility is designed to keep the state’s physical land records alongside electronic data, providing a more organised system for retrieving and managing information critical to land administration and development.
Sanwo Olu said the archive has given Lagos the largest land information storage facility in West Africa, describing reliable information as necessary for understanding the changing needs of the city and planning accordingly.
The governor also inspected the e-GIS offices, including the Physical Planning and Automation Department, Survey Information Centre, GIS Centre and the Office of the Surveyor-General.
He said the technology driven operations across the facilities were supporting decisions on land administration, physical planning, infrastructure and other aspects of urban development.
Sanwo Olu noted that Lagos’ continued growth makes access to accurate information increasingly important, adding that better data would support more effective planning and improve service delivery to residents.
