The State Commissioner for Works (Rural Roads) and Public Information, Charles Aniagwu, announced the directive in a statement issued on Thursday in Asaba.

Aniagwu said the decision followed growing difficulties faced by motorists, residents, traders and other road users after a portion of the federal highway was damaged by erosion.

According to the Commissioner, heavy rainfall and strong erosive activity caused the affected section of the road to collapse, creating a major obstruction along one of the key routes linking communities across the Niger Delta.

Although the East-West Road is under the Federal Government, Aniagwu said Governor Oborevwori considered the situation too urgent to ignore because of its impact on the daily movement of people and goods.

He said Julius Berger had therefore been directed to carry out remedial work on the damaged portion to help restore safe and smoother movement along the corridor.

Aniagwu explained that the decision reflected the state government's approach of responding to pressing infrastructure problems based on their effect on residents, rather than waiting for jurisdictional processes to delay action.

He described the East-West Road as an important transportation route for commuters, farmers, traders, businesses and transport operators, stressing that prolonged disruption could affect economic activities in several communities.

The Commissioner assured motorists that efforts were being made to ease the situation and restore normal traffic conditions at the affected location.

He also appealed to road users to exercise caution when approaching the damaged section while repair work is ongoing.

Aniagwu said the state government would continue to work with federal authorities and private-sector partners where necessary to address infrastructure challenges affecting the wellbeing and economic activities of residents.
