Orodje of Okpe's Coronation Directives Irks Itsekiri Communities In Sapele
The Sapele Itsekiri Aboriginal Communities Forum (SIACF) has called on the Delta State Government and security agencies to prevent a possible escalation of tensions following an Okpe traditional council directive restricting burials and weddings during the Orodje's 20th coronation anniversary.

The forum, in an open letter dated October 8, objected to the directive banning such ceremonies across the Okpe Kingdom from November 13 to 22, 2026, arguing that it should not apply to the aboriginal Itsekiri communities of Sapele.
The forum also raised concerns over an alleged October 3 incursion by persons it identified as Okpe into Ogun-Aja, an aboriginal Itsekiri community.
Describing unauthorised intrusion, intimidation and interference with community activities as unacceptable, the SIACF urged traditional and community leaders to discourage inflammatory statements and actions.
It said the Itsekiri communities were committed to peaceful coexistence with their neighbours, but would not surrender their lawful rights.
“We therefore call on all parties, particularly traditional leaders and community leaders, to discourage inflammatory statements, unauthorised incursions and any conduct capable of escalating tensions,” the statement said.
The forum urged Governor Sheriff Oborevwori and security agencies to ensure the protection of lives, property and community rights, while calling for dialogue to resolve the disagreement.
It stressed that it had no objection to the Orodje's anniversary celebrations, but wanted the Okpe traditional institution to reconsider any interpretation of its directive that could affect communities outside its authority.
