Two Years in Darkness: Opete Residents Welcome New Transformer
After more than two years without electricity, residents of Opete Community in Udu Local Government Area of Delta State finally have a reason to hope for the return of light.
Their excitement peaked around 10pm when a self-loader carrying a new 500kVA transformer arrived in the community.
The transformer was donated by the Senior Special Assistant to Governor Sheriff Oborevwori on Community Development, Olorogun Oscar Ishaka, who said he was moved by the hardship caused by the prolonged blackout.
“The light situation in Opete has been a major source of concern to me. That is why I decided to personally purchase this transformer,” Ishaka said.
For traders and artisans, the intervention could mean the difference between struggling and getting their businesses back on their feet.
A local tailor said she had bought an electric sewing machine more than two years ago but had never been able to use it because of the blackout.
The President of Opete Community, Comrade Sunny Jivwie, described the arrival of the transformer as a major relief, thanking Ishaka for responding to the community’s plight.
Residents, however, are still waiting for the transformer to be installed and energised.
