Udu By-Election: Delta Police Deploy Personnel, Warn Against Violence

The Commissioner of Police, Delta State Command, CP Samuel E. Erale, psc, mnips, has ordered the deployment of police personnel across Udu Local Government Area to safeguard the electoral process and maintain peace before, during and after the poll.

According to a statement issued on Thursday, September 17, by the Police Public Relations Officer, SP Bright Edafe, personnel will be stationed at polling units, collation centres, major routes and other identified strategic locations within the constituency.

The command said patrol and response teams would also be deployed to monitor the area and respond swiftly to any security threats or attempts to disrupt the election.

CP Erale directed all officers assigned to the exercise to remain professional, vigilant and impartial in the discharge of their duties.

The police are expected to protect voters, Independent National Electoral Commission (INEC) officials, accredited observers and electoral materials throughout the exercise.

The Delta State Police Command also issued a strong warning against acts capable of undermining the peaceful conduct of the by-election.

It specifically warned political actors and their supporters against political thuggery, violence, voter intimidation, vote buying, ballot snatching, possession of firearms and other dangerous weapons, destruction of electoral materials and any attempt to interfere with the electoral process.

The command urged candidates and political leaders to caution their supporters, stressing that anyone arrested for engaging in activities capable of disrupting the election would face the full consequences of the law.

CP Erale assured residents of Udu that the police would provide adequate security to enable eligible voters to exercise their franchise without fear or intimidation.

He also called on residents, candidates and political supporters to cooperate with security personnel and maintain peaceful conduct throughout the election.

The Commissioner reiterated the neutrality of the police in the electoral process, stressing that the command would enforce the law against anyone who attempts to disturb public peace, regardless of political status or affiliation.

The Udu State Constituency by-election is scheduled to hold on Saturday, September 19, 2026.
