31-Year-Old NYSC Member Remanded Over Alleged Defilement of Six-Year-Old Girl in Delta

A 31-year-old National Youth Service Corps (NYSC) member, Godstime Onyenechara, has been remanded in custody after he was arraigned over the alleged defilement of a six-year-old girl in Ekpan, Uvwie Local Government Area of Delta State.

The suspect, who was serving as a teacher at a private school along Jakpa Road, Ekpan, was reportedly brought before High Court 1, Effurun, where he was remanded at the Warri Correctional Centre, Okere, pending further proceedings.

The case has been adjourned until September 18, 2026, for the Director of Public Prosecutions (DPP) to provide legal advice.

The development follows an earlier police investigation into the alleged sexual abuse of the child. The Nigeria Police Force had confirmed the arrest of Onyenechara, stating that detectives commenced investigation after receiving a report concerning the six-year-old girl. Police also said a medical examination conducted at a government hospital confirmed penetration.

According to information surrounding the case, the child allegedly told investigators that she was left alone with the suspect on occasions when her mother could not arrive early enough to pick her up from school.

She reportedly alleged that the suspect would take her to an apartment within the school premises, where the abuse occurred, before threatening her with a handkerchief allegedly used to clean her blood.

The child further alleged that she was warned not to tell her mother, with threats that she would be killed if she disclosed what had happened.

Medical findings reportedly presented in connection with the case indicated injuries to the child's genital area, including a ruptured vulva and a broken hymen.

The arrest was earlier acknowledged by the Nigeria Police Force as part of its recent security operations in Delta State. The Force identified Onyenechara as a serving NYSC member attached to a school in Ekpan and said the medical examination had confirmed penetration.

The police investigation followed what officials described as a swift response by the Divisional Police Officer of Ekpan Division, CSP Saibu Braimoh.

With the suspect now in custody and the matter before the court, attention is expected to shift to the DPP's advice and the protection and welfare of the child as the legal process continues.

Case adjourned to September 18, 2026.
