The Benin Electricity Distribution Company (BEDC) announced the development in a statement, assuring customers that efforts were underway to restore electricity supply safely and gradually across the affected states.

The strike, which commenced in the early hours of October 19, 2026, disrupted electricity supply following the shutdown of BEDC’s electricity feeders by protesting workers.

The dispute arose from unresolved concerns over salary adjustments following the implementation of the national minimum wage, salary harmonisation and other staff welfare matters.

In its statement announcing the suspension, BEDC said: “Our teams are working towards the safe and gradual restoration of electricity supply. We sincerely appreciate your patience and understanding.”

Addressing the salary harmonisation issue, the company stated: “Salary harmonisation was already under review before the industrial action commenced. Management remains committed to achieving a fair and sustainable outcome.”

BEDC had earlier explained that a joint committee comprising management and union representatives was established to examine the consequential adjustments arising from the national minimum wage, but its work and recommendations were yet to be concluded.

On salary harmonisation, the company said both parties had agreed to engage an independent consultant to review the existing salary structure, employee categories, internal equity and the financial implications of the proposed changes.

The suspension of the industrial action is expected to facilitate the resumption of electricity distribution operations and the gradual restoration of power to affected customers.

BEDC also reaffirmed its commitment to addressing workers’ concerns through dialogue while ensuring the delivery of reliable electricity supply across its franchise areas.
