NDDC Moves to Fix 15km Sapele–Benin Road

A 15-kilometre portion of the Sapele–Benin Road in Edo State is to receive fresh rehabilitation works from the Niger Delta Development Commission (NDDC), following renewed attention to the condition of the major route.

The development came after an on-the-spot assessment of the Sapele–Benin and Benin–Agbor corridors in Benin City.

The inspection brought together Works Minister Dave Umahi, Edo State Governor Monday Okpebholo, NDDC representatives, lawmakers and other stakeholders.

The Federal Government had raised concerns over the state of the highways, particularly the difficulties being faced by motorists and the effect of the poor road conditions on commercial activities and movement within the region.

Officials and representatives of construction firms involved in projects around the Benin–Asaba axis also joined the inspection, where the progress of the concessioned road project came under scrutiny.

Following the assessment, the NDDC agreed to take responsibility for the 15-kilometre section of the Sapele–Benin Road.

The intervention is expected to provide relief to road users while supporting broader efforts to restore the corridor.

The commission said the project would be pursued in collaboration with the Federal and Edo State governments, with the aim of improving transportation and strengthening connectivity across the Niger Delta.
