The Delta State Government has approved an extension of the retirement age for skilled clinical health professionals in government hospitals from 60 to 65 years, with the maximum length of service increased from 35 to 40 years, whichever comes first.

Governor Sheriff Oborevwori approved the policy on Monday, October 26, 2026, covering 26 cadres of clinical health professionals actively involved in patient care across government hospitals in the state.

The decision is aimed at retaining experienced medical personnel, addressing manpower shortages and improving healthcare delivery across Delta State.

Under the new policy, eligible officers are required to apply through their respective Chief Medical Directors six months before reaching 60 years of age or completing 35 years of service.

Approval will be subject to medical fitness screening by the state Ministry of Health.

The extension applies specifically to skilled clinical health professionals working in government hospitals and excludes personnel serving in ministries and extra-ministerial departments.
